Also hot take I think the LAMEST thing you can do as a comic is care only if something is funny!! I'm at these mics and comics are straight-faced-"It-takes-a-lot-to-make-me-laugh" and I'm flabbergasted bc we're all up there doing something extremely difficult, why NOT get interested in why something isn't working or could work in a different way!!?
Caleb Hearon had a great quote in one of his "So True" podcast episodes (I think the one with Adam Connover) where he's like (and I'm super paraphrasing): "I don't subscribe to this idea that the comic is there to like milk the audience for their experiences to make fun of them directly for it, it's lazy, I see the comic's job is to be a HOST -- you've spent money and time to come out here, I'm not gonna go up there and make fun of you and not have things to offer you, we're in the service industry"... and I really felt that! And think you cannot be a good host if you do not have sincere and authentic interest and curiosity about things. Pete Holmes is a great example of making the uncool/mundane really funny and almost miraculous through his sheer will of finding the whimsy in shit and this post made me think of that.
